Commissioner Grunshaw praises Ormskirk Street Pastors following visit

Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw has praised the dedication and compassion of volunteers from Ormskirk Street Pastors following a recent visit to see first-hand the invaluable work they do to support vulnerable people in the town’s night-time economy.

The Commissioner joined Street Pastors and local police officers on a Friday evening patrol, known locally as ‘Mischief Night’  and also met officers as part of Operation Bright Sparx. The visit provided an opportunity to see first-hand how volunteers engage with members of the public, offer practical support, and help people stay safe during busy nights in the town centre.

Working closely with Lancashire Constabulary, door staff and CCTV operators, the Street Pastors play a vital role in supporting vulnerable people, helping those who may be distressed, intoxicated, separated from friends or otherwise in need of assistance.  Street Pastors are trained in first aid and have undertaken additional KnifeSavers training, enabling them to provide immediate support in an emergency. Volunteers also carry specialist trauma kits, which could prove vital while waiting for emergency services to arrive. Their strong partnerships and visible presence help prevent harm, reduce vulnerability, and contribute to a safer night-time environment for everyone.

Speaking after the visit, Commissioner Clive Grunshaw said: “It was a privilege to join Ormskirk Street Pastors on Mischief Night and witness first-hand the incredible work they do. These dedicated volunteers give up their own time to look after others, offering practical help, reassurance, and support to people when they need it most.

“I was particularly impressed by the strength of the partnerships in place. The close working relationships between Street Pastors, local police officers, door staff and CCTV operators create an effective network focused on keeping people safe and preventing issues from escalating.

“Their commitment makes a real difference to Ormskirk and helps make the town centre a safer and more welcoming place for residents, visitors and businesses alike.”

Dave Mutch, Ormskirk Street Pastor Co-Ordinator, added:

“It was great to have the Commissioner with us to see first hand our work in Ormskirk which we started in January 2011. New volunteers are welcome to join us, for further information please contact ormskirk@streetpastors.org.uk.”

The Commissioner continues to support a range of community safety initiatives across Lancashire through grant funding, including an annual contribution of £2,500 to Ormskirk Street Pastors and support for Street Angels groups operating elsewhere in the county. These volunteer-led organisations provide vital assistance to vulnerable people, helping partners to prevent harm and ensure everyone can enjoy the town safely.

The work of Ormskirk Street Pastors also complements the Government’s Safer Town Centres Initiative, which encourages partnership working to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour, and vulnerability in town centres.
